Museum tips its hat to mountain toppers

On Nov. 18, the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center honored all those who, over the course of the year, finished the Swannanoa Valley Rim Explorer Series and the Valley History Explorer Series over the course of the year.

At the banquet, each finisher was awarded a Patagonia jacket or fleece sponsored by Black Mountain Savings Bank. 

The 19 hikers who finished the Swannanoa Valley Rim Hike Series in 2017 are, from left, Olson Huff, Gerald Ledford, Bill Hodge, Mary Standaert, Rick Hebert, Jayne Cleveland (and Lavender), Marsha White, Kim Schwartz, Wendy Kady, Judy Sanderson, Charles Jolley, Helen Kraus, Joe Standaert, Andy White, John Buckner and Lucy Sawyer (not pictured are Walt Tolley and Laurie Halterman-Garcia).

The Swannanoa Valley Rim Explorer Series is composed of 11 moderate-strenuous hikes that circumnavigate the Swannanoa Valley ridgeline. The Valley History Explorer Series is composed of eight moderate, three-mile hikes that take place in one of the eight small communities that make up the Swannanoa Valley.

The Rim Hike Series will restart on Jan. 20 with the Rhododendron Rim Hike. The Valley History Explorer Series will begin again on March 10 with the Bee Tree community hike.
