Six Owen athletes headed east for Greensboro on May 17, as they prepared to represent the school in the NCHSAA State Championship.

A pair of Warlassies turned in top-10 performances in their events.

With a throw of 140 feet, senior Chesney Gardner finished second in the state in discus. Her 35-foot-8.75-inch shot put landed her fifth in that event.

Sophomore Laila Burk placed eighth in the 800-meter run with a personal record of 2:29.34. She was the only Western North Carolina high school runner to place among the top 10 in the event.

Sophomore Shavoy Harding also posted a personal record of 23.05 in the 200-meter dash, which placed him at 11th in the meet.

Harding, along with Caleb Wells, Trace Allen and Austin Gregg, placed 16th in the 4X200 relay.
