Sidney Gibbs highlight makes SportsCenter's Top 10
A lot of people have tried to tackle Sidney Gibbs this season. A lot of them have failed.
In fact, the Swannanoa Valley native and Christ School standout has broken countless tackles on his way to becoming the leading rusher in Western North Carolina.
At a Oct. 6 home game in Arden against conference foe Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.), Gibbs on a simple pitch right from Christ School quarterback West Shuler broke nine tackles on his way to a touchdown - and an eventual appearance on ESPN’s flagship highlight show "SportsCenter."
Gibbs has been a force for the 7-0 Greenies this season, averaging a touchdown every 6.8 carries.
With a 14-3 lead in the second quarter against Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, Gibbs turned in perhaps his most impressive run of the season.
From his own 42-yard line, Gibbs split a pair of defenders in the backfield and accelerated beyond the line of scrimmage before breaking a pair of tackles simultaneously and reversing field back to his left. He made another defender miss on his way to turning the corner on the left side of the field, where he delivered a vicious stiff-arm to a would-be tackler before breaking three more tackles on his was to the end zone.
The play had been viewed over 1.2 million times on the SportsCenter Instagram page as of the following Monday.
Gibbs finished the evening with 322 rushing yards in a 49-9 Greenies victory. His performance added to his already gaudy numbers this season.
That total was a career high for Gibbs - until Oct. 13, when Christ School picked up a 42-35 win over Charlotte Latin on the strength of a 337-yard night for the running back.
After playing in only seven games (the Greenies were awarded a forfeit against Victory Christian Center on Sept. 25), Gibbs became the leading rusher in the region.
As of Oct.14, Mountain Heritage senior Trey Robinson had racked up 1,551 yards in seven games (221.6 yards per game) while Gibbs collected 1,559 yards in just six contests (259.8 yards per game). Gibbs has averaged over 16 yards per carry over that same period.
Gibbs transferred from Owen High School to Christ School this past summer after a knee injury kept him from missing what would’ve been his junior season for the Warhorses last year. He reclassified as a junior for the Greenies, leaving him with two years of eligibility.
His brother Saevion, a sophomore at Christ School, is an offensive and defensive lineman for the Greenies, who have two more games remaining on their regular season schedule as of press deadline.
The brothers' uncle, Shawn Gibbs, is in his seventh season as the running backs coach at North Carolina A&T State University. The Aggies were 7-0 as of last week.
