Dark City Storm wins championship
The Dark City Storm, coached by Jason Hamilton and Butch Stamey and assisted by Owen High School softball player Hannah Quinn, posted a 9-8 win in their first game at the 14U Henderson County Youth League tournament May 14. In that game, the team scored six runs in the final inning to take the lead.
Strong pitching by Kaylee Gilkeyson and Sierra Chapman in the second game led to a 9-2 victory. The third game, wrapping up in a chilly 11:30 p.m. slugfest, ended in 14-11 loss when Etowah put together a grand slam in the final inning.
Playing against Etowah again in the championship game on May 15, the Storm took an early lead off home runs by Hannah Fortson and Addison Hamilton, but Etowah fought back to tie it 13-13 in the bottom of the sixth.
In extra innings, the Storm put together a series of base hits and steals to take the lead and held on for a 15-14 victory to secure the tournament championship. Gilkeyson pitched five strong innings, and Chapman pitched a no-hitter in the final inning.
