Shoeboxes for children and other Letters to the Editor

Area residents come through for children

The generosity of Black Mountain residents to help children overseas this past Christmas season was amazing. Working together, we were able to collect 37,400 shoeboxes locally and 11.2 million worldwide for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind.

Each shoebox gift was filled with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items. At the Cancer Institute in Tanzania, 67 children received boxes. All the children were excited. One child who was unable to speak for many days because of his illness started to speak after receiving his gifts. The doctors and nurses were amazed.

Shoebox gifts can be packed any time. Continue your Valentine spirit by filling a box. For many of the children, the shoeboxes will be the first gifts they have ever received. Gifts can be received year-round at Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in Boone.

With a computer or mobile device, anyone can conveniently pack a personalized shoebox gift at samaritanspurse.org/occ. Select toys and gifts, write a note and “pack” them in a shoebox. Discover where in the world your gifts will be delivered after they are shipped.

These simple gifts, packed with love, communicate hope and continue to transform the lives of children worldwide.
