Refusing discrimination and other Letters to the Editor
We should never adjust to these things
Martin Luther King, Jr. said in a keynote talk to the American Psychological Association in l967, that “it may well be that our world is in dire need of a new organization - the International Association for the Advancement of Creative Maladjustment.”
He listed some things in our society that we must always be maladjusted to:
- Racial discrimination and racial segregation
- Religious bigotry
- Economic conditions that take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few
- The madness of militarism
- The self-defeating effects of physical violence
As people of goodwill, what do we choose in 2016 not to adjust ourselves to? What actions does creative maladjustment require us to take?
