Doris Thelma McMahan

Hoover, Alabama

Doris Thelma McMahan Hampton, 83, of Hoover, Alabama passed away Friday, June 14, 2019 at Brookwood Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. Hampton was born October 28, 1935 in Yancey County to the late James Waymon and Lena Gertrude McMahan.

She was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Maneva Farr and husband, Joe and Genevieve Robertson and husband, Ralph; sister-in-law, Clara Crisp McMahan and niece, Deborah McMahan Looper.

Mrs. Hampton is survived by her daughter, Susan H. Olive and husband, Russell and son, David W. Hampton and wife, Donna all of Birmingham, AL; brother, Bill McMahan of Greenville, SC; and four grandchildren, Regan Brooke Olive, Ryan Taylor Olive, Matthew David Hampton, and Brandon Michael Hampton.

A Celebration of Life Service was held June 18 in the chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals.  Burial was in Piney Grove Cemetery. Ryan Olive, Matthew Hampton, Brandon Hampton, Mike Farr, Jeffrey Farr, Ray Grant, David Harris, and Steve W. Looper served as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Kenneth Burgess

Kenneth Burgess

Kenneth Ronald Burgess, born August 27, 1933 from Black Mountain, NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2019 surrounded by close family at the John F. Keever Solace Center.

As a lifelong resident of Black Mountain, Kenneth was a fixture at the post office with 48 years of dedication to cleaning anything, ensuring it always looked good.  After retirement, Kenneth could be found with his brother cheering at the Charles D. Owen football and basketball games or relaxing at home watching wildlife appear in the yard.  Kenneth enjoyed singing gospel music as a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, belly laughing while watching The Three Stooges and Monday Night wrestling, and unconditionally loving his family, especially adoring his only nephew.  They had a special bond spending time together watching Carolina Basketball, reminiscing of memories, and always eating food together.

Beloved son of the late Frank and Clarice Carr Burgess of Black Mountain, he is survived by his brother, Gerald and Judy Silver Burgess of East Asheville; nephew, Todd and Alisha Russell Burgess of Atlanta, GA; and many loving family members from North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 2:00pm in the chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals.  Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Park.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mildred Collins

Black Mountain

Mildred Collins, 91, of Black Mountain passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the McCune Center of Black Mountain.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Collins and Lula DeHart Collins; sisters, Katie Collins, Gladys Elliott, and Josephine Clements; brothers, Kelse, Cleve, Dexter, and Jack Collins.

She is survived by her sisters, Irene Stephenson and Gerri Davis and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service was held June 18 at Lakey Gap Presbyterian Church.  Burial was in Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Rutherfordton.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to McCune Center or Four Seasons Hospice.

Simon Srey

Black Mountain

Simon Srey, 65, of Black Mountain, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019.

Mr. Srey was born June 14, 1953 in Cambodia to the late Moeung Srey and Nuon Pol. He retired from Drexel Heritage with over 15 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church, Black Mountain.

Simon is survived by his wife, Dany Srey; daughters, Chenda Mak, Ruth Srey Grace (Enrique), and Lingo Weimer (Donald); sisters, Yon Dy (Dam) and Pansy (Var); brothers, Sam Srey (Tharen) and Samath (Sokha); two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was held June 21, 2019 in the chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals.  Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Park.

The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home.
