Betty Hartshorn

Ridgecrest 

Betty Hartshorn, 90, of Ridgecrest, passed away July 20, 2018.

Betty was born October 25, 1927 in Columbus, OH to the late Ira and Pearl Miracle.

Mrs. Hartshorn enjoyed knitting and needlework. She made hats and gloves for children in the area as well as blankets for veterans. Betty also loved spending time with her family and tending her flowers. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Black Mountain.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hartshorn; and brother, Vernon Miracle.

Betty is survived by her children, Phil, Carol, Kenny, and Marilyn; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins, Angela and Virginia Lee; brother-in-law, Don and family; and sister-in-law, Carolyn.

A Celebration of Life Service was held July 28 at First Baptist Church in Black Mountain. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Park.

Jack "Rusty" Lunsford

Black Mountain

Jack “Rusty” Lunsford, 76, of Black Mountain passed away Thursday July 5, 2018.

Mr. Lunsford was born January 18, 1942 in Buncombe County to the late Gordon and Ruth Cordell Lunsford.  Rusty was a veteran of the US Navy.  He was a self-employed contractor, master mason, builder, and a craftsman.  He never met a stranger and always had a smile and laugh that would light up a room.  Rusty was past Master of the Black Mountain Masonic Lodge.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Leigh Lunsford.  

Rusty is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandy Lindsay Lunsford; sons, Jamie Lunsford and Charlie Lunsford (Chloe); sister, Yvonne Reese; and grandchildren, Zachary, Lindsay, and Colton.

The family received friends on July 8 at Mountain View Baptist Church. 

A graveside service immediately followed the visitation in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.

James "Jim" Clyde Hood

Marion

James “Jim” Clyde Hood, age 55, of Marion, North Carolina passed away Friday, July 20, 2018 at his residence.

Jim was born November 16, 1962 in Buncombe County, NC to the late James Clyde Hood and Alana Beddingfield Hood.  He was a member of Bee Tree Baptist Church in Swannanoa, NC and prior to his illness, he worked for Kearfott Corp. in Swannanoa, NC.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Gail Hood in 2003.

Those left behind to cherish Jim’s memories are three children, Jessica Hood, Kyle Hood and Justin Hood; four grandchildren, Orson Dyer, Olivia Fister, Lillian Fister and Bodhi Oneal; and two siblings, Jessica Hood and Justin Hood.

In keeping with Jim’s wishes, no service was held.

Beverly Spivey Henry

Fairview

Beverly Spivey Henry, 69, of Fairview, went home to be with Jesus on July 26, 2018.

She was born March 5, 1949, in Buncombe County to the late Aldon and Juanita Spivey. Beverly enjoyed gardening, and she was a member of Cedar Mountain Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Henry; sister, Mary Fender; and brother, Bill Spivey.

Beverly is survived by her daughter, Karen Lauffer (Eric); son, Anthony Pack (Cherelle); grandchildren, Lauren Moore, Hunter Moore, and Tyler Walker; great grandchildren, Rush Warren, Holden Moore, Jace Walker, Alexandra Walker, and Cole Walker; sister, Eunice Summey; brother, Arnold Spivey; niece, Carrie Shuler; and nephew, Nolan Hunter.

A Celebration of Life Service was held July 30 at Harwood Home for Funerals with Rev. Luther Spivey and Rev. Jimmy Page officiating. Burial followed immediately in Mountain View Memorial Park.

 The family received friends one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home.
