Carolyn Shepherd Harris

Black Mountain

Carolyn Shepherd Harris, age 67, of Black Mountain, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2016 at her home.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, wife and sister.

She enjoyed working in her yard, flowerbeds, sitting on the front porch watching the birds and spending time with family.

She was born on December 16, 1948 in Buncombe County to the late Charles Boyd Shepherd and Agnes Wheeler Shepherd.

She retired from the Juvenile Detention Center with 20 years of service.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Edgar Harris; daughter, Tammy Thorpe Hartsook (Brian) of Black Mountain, granddaughter; Amanda Hartsook; stepdaughter; Tammy Morris (John) of Charlotte, NC; stepson; Chris Harris of Charlotte, NC; two stepgrandsons, River Morris and Denver Morris of Charlotte, NC; sister, Mary Louise Styles (John) of Morganton, NC; brothers, Harold Shepherd (Linda) of Rutherfordton, Steve Shepherd of Rutherfordton, Louis Shepherd of Horse Branch, KY; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers; Doug Shepherd and Clyde Shepherd.

She will always be remembered for her compassion, honesty and willing to help others.

Phillip Nathan Carter

Swannanoa

Phillip Nathan Carter, 35, of Swannanoa, passed away April 12, 2016.

He was a loving man who will be missed by all who knew him.

Phillip is preceded in death by his father, Richard Carter; and brother, Derrick Carter.

Phillip is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Ballew; stepfather, Terry Lee; daughters, Mallory Foxx, Stephanie Carter, Natalie Carter, and Latasha Styles; brother, Lee Hart; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service was be held Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 7 p.m. at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Cantrell officiating.

The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Katherine Beatrice Hampton

Black Mountain

Katherine Beatrice Hampton (Bedie) passed away early in the morning on April 13, 2016.

She was born on December 3, 1920 at home in Azalea, NC to Alec Burtis and Kate Yow.

She married Benjamin Kent Hampton in October of 1941 just before Pearl Harbor.

As her husband departed to World War II, she stayed behind and awaited his return in 1945.

Bedie attended Asheville Normal and Teachers College earning her education degree.

She taught in Buncombe County schools, ending her career at Black Mountain Primary.

She was a member of Azalea UMC and later East Asheville UMC.

Bedie is preceded in death by her husband and her son, Burtis.

She leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Clarence Hensley; her daughter, Kay Hampton; her sons, Brian and Kent Hampton; and her daughter-in-law, Vivian Hampton.

She also leaves behind grandchildren, Beth Rock, Seth Hampton and Rebekah Bardin. Great-grandchildren left are Kelly, Carrie and Aaron Rock, Isaac and Daisy Hampton and Tray, Carson and Sadie Bardin.

Services was held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Harwood Home for Funerals in Black Mountain, NC with visitation at 1 p.m. and funeral at 2 p.m.

Burial was at Azalea Church Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Asheville UMC, 48 Browndale Road, Asheville NC 28805.
