Gently-Used Donations Needed for Museum Rummage Sale
Donate your gently-used household goods, kitchen items, collectibles, books, children’s toys, furniture to the non-profit Swannanoa Valley Museum’s fiscal year end Rummage Sale. We can arrange pick up for bulky items.
The museum is unable to accept donations of clothing or electronics. Donors will receive a tax receipt.

This year’s sale will take place in the same location as previous years – under a large red and white tent at the corner of Padgettown Road and Old U.S. 70 in Black Mountain and will be open Friday, August 2 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday, August 3 from 8 a.m. until noon.
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry needs
A current list of needs at the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry: Sheets (flat and fitted – especially queen and king sizes), laundry detergent, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, baby wipes, diapers, pull-ups, and men’s pants and jeans. Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to P.O. Box 235). Drop off items at 101 N. Ridgeway Avenue, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
Celebrate Recovery meetings
Are you or someone you know struggling with anger, codependency, eating disorder, love & relationship addiction, abuse, alcohol, drug of other forms of addiction? Celebrate Recovery, which meets every Tuesday evening at Mountain View Church on 2221 North Fork-Right Fork, features inspiring teaching and testimonies of God’s healing power by our family in recovery.
Meetings begin at 6:15 p.m. with a free meal, before worship, testimony, or lessons begin at 7 p.m. Small groups take place at 8:00 p.m. for open share and 12-Step studies,before dessert is served at 9 p.m. Free child care is available. Poker night at the VFW
VFW Post 9157 is hosting Wednesday night poker night. The weekly tournaments are open to the public, with the first one beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a 9 p.m. tournament.
Lou the Commander will cook dinner plates and dinner is $5. A $5 credit will be awarded to the winner of each tournament.
Kiwanis Club seeks grant applications from local nonprofits
The Kiwanis Club of Black Mountain-Swannanoa is inviting local nonprofit organizations to apply for community service grants to fund projects or programs aimed at improving the lives of children and families in the Swannanoa Valley.
Interested organizations should Email Carol McNally at cmercmcnally@gmail.com for a grant application. Completed applications must be emailed or postmarked by Friday, June 28.

Registration open for adult kickball league
The Black Mountain Recreation and Parks are accepting team registrations for the 2019 Adult Kickball League. The registration fee is $200 for the co-ed league that features an eight-game schedule. The league will begin play the week of July 8. Games will be played at Veteran’s Park.
Rosters are available at the recreation and parks office located at 304 Black Mountain Avenue. The deadline for entry is Friday, June 28. The league will be limited to the first 8 teams registered. For more information, call 669-2052.
Museum book club meets to discuss 'Bearwallow: A Personal History of a Mountain'
The Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center's Book Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at the Black Mountain Public Library. June's read is "Bearwallow: A Personal History of a Mountain Homeland" by Jeremy B. Jones.

Montreat College basketball camp
Montreat College is hosting a basketball camp for girls and boys grades 1-8, June 17-21. Women's basketball head coach Tim Lewis and assistant coach Daria Sharova will coach the camp.
The cost is $100 per camper.

FamilyPalooza at The Ridge Church
The Ridge Church, 41, Tucker Road, Black Mountain, will host a free FamilyPalooza event from 6 - 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18.

Documentary series highlights 'Quilting Women'
Join the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center for the second film in their new Historic Documentary Series at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20.
June's film selection, produced by Appalshop Films, is “Quilting Women” (1976). In addition to the film, the museum will also display quilts from its collections.
From Appalshop’s website: “Quilting Women traces the process of traditional Appalachian quilting, from cutting out and piecing together the patterns to the quilting bee. Quilters comment on the origins of the generations-old patterns, the time and patience required, the satisfaction of accomplishment, the quilts as art, and the companionship offered by women working together over a quilting frame.”

History of Skyland
Learn about the origins and development of the Skyland community, established by Otis Miller in 1887, when the Old Buncombe Genealogical Society hosts "History of Skyland, N.C." at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.
Sandy Samz, whose recently published book “Skyland and Its Founder" is available at the Society library and OBCGS eBay bookstore, will explore how this community was influenced by the families who settled in the area.

Davidson's Fort Historic Park presents Farming the Militia
Davidson's Fort Historic Park in Old Fort will present Farming the Militia from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on June 22 and 23.
The event will feature demonstrators and reenactors from the 18th century.
The event is $5 for ages 13 and up and free for children 12 and under.
Broad River Ice Cream Social
The Auxiliary of the Broad River Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual ice cream social from 2 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at the Boad River Community Center.

Museum Hosts Independence Day Fireworks Hike
This year, celebrate the Fourth of July with your family, friends, guests, and the Swannanoa Valley Museum on a 1.5-mile, moderate hike to the peak of Sunset Mountain.
Here, Museum guests will enjoy an old-fashioned watermelon cutting, and then stay to watch the sun set and the fireworks explode over the town of Black Mountain.
Hike leaders will share the history and vintage photographs of this most historic place over dinner.
Bring a picnic, water, folding chairs, cameras, and flashlights. The Museum will provide watermelon and transport cargo to the summit. Harwood Home for Funerals & Cremation Services invites the public to attend its annual cookout from 12 - 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 4.
