Poker night at the VFW
VFW Post 9157 is hosting Wednesday night poker night. The weekly tournaments are open to the public, with the first one beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a 9 p.m. tournament.
Lou the Commander will cook dinner plates and dinner is $5. A $5 credit will be awarded to the winner of each tournament.
Fairview Preschool hosts open house
Fairview Preschool for ages 2 - 5 is holding an open house for the 2019-20 school year from 10 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, March 6, 20 and 27. Families needing a different time can call the school at 828-338-2073 to schedule a class visit.
Local nonprofits encouraged to apply for endowment fund grants
The Black Mountain – Swannanoa Valley Endowment Fund, an affiliate of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, is accepting applications for its spring grant cycle from nonprofits serving the Swannanoa Valley.
The grants will range in size from $2,500 - $10,000, and will focus on projects and programs relating to health and wellness, education, cultural and natural resources and people in need. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 1. The online application can be accessed at cfwnc.org/Nonprofits/GrantPrograms. Registration open for the annual Owen Golf Tournament
The 24th Annual Owen Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the Black Mountain Golf Course with a weather make-up date of March 9. The format will be four person captain's choice. There will be trophies and prizes provided. The cost is $50 per person or $200 per team, which includes lunch.

Annual Auction for the Arts tickets on sale
There is limited seating for the Black Mountain Center for the Arts annual Auction for the Arts planned for 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. The event includes a catered buffet dinner, silent auction and live auction featuring professional auctioneer Dean HIttleman and the on-stage antics of artist Julia Burr. This will be the 14th year this lively event has been held. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 the day of the auction if tickets are still available.
The range of items available for bid include vacation rentals, jewelry, furniture, pottery, artwork, accessories, baskets of goodies, gift certificates for goods and services and much more. This is an important fundraiser for the non-profit organization which has brought “arts to the people and people to the arts” for the past 20 years.
