Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry needs
A current list of needs at the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry: ramen noodles, canned black beans, canned red kidney beans, canned pork-n-beans. We are also in need of toiletry items: soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, and shampoo. Also needed are towels and queen size sheets. Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to P.O. Box 235). Drop off items at 101 N. Ridgeway Avenue, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
Poker night at the VFW
VFW Post 9157 is hosting Wednesday night poker night. The weekly tournaments are open to the public, with the first one beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a 9 p.m. tournament.
Lou the Commander will cook dinner plates and dinner is $5. A $5 credit will be awarded to the winner of each tournament.
Winter market at Roots & Fruits
Roots & Fruits Market, located at 151 South Ridgeway Avenue, will hold a winter market from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2.
The market, which is held indoors, features products from area vendors and takes place weekly through the month of April.
Yarn Shop holds annual sample sale
The Black Mountain Yarn Shop is having their annual sample sale. Included in the sale are handmade sweaters, scarves, hats and shawls. These retired items were once used in the shop as samples and there are also lovely items donated by some of the shop’s customers.
All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry. The sale is going on now and will continue through the end of February or until all of the times have been sold.

Red House Studios & Gallery to host reception for art show opening
An opening reception for "The Art of Passion" will be held at the Red House Studio & Gallery on 310 West State Street from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8.
The exhibit will feature a variety of work from members of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League and will run from Feb. 8 - March 12.
The reception is free and open to the public.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast returns
The 29th Annual Swannanoa Valley Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Prayer Breakfast returns to Camp Dorothy Walls on 495 Cragmont Road at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9.
The event, which celebrates the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., raises money that is used to award scholarships to graduating seniors from the Swannanoa Valley.
Tickets are available at the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and are $15 for adults and $6 for children. For more information visit svmlk.org.
The Valentine 5K is back for its 20th year
The 20th Annual Valentine 5K returns to Lake Tomahawk at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9.
The event features a free fun run for children ages 16 and under, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The fun run is followed by the 5K, which takes runners along some of the town's greenways.
Runners can register online at blackmountainrec.com or runsignup.com/race/nc/blackmountain/valentine5k. Registration is $25 for adults.
