Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge
The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk on Oct. 9 and had a great time. There were two winners. Coming in first was the North-South team of Ron Gibson and Betty Gibson. The first place East-West team consisted of Dan McGuaghey and Roger Fenna. The game is free on Tuesday nights, and if you would like to join in, whether local or from out of town, email firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
Go all in on Wednesdays with Poker at the Post
Black Mountain VFW Post 9157 on 165 Cragmont Road is hosting Poker at the Post on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The first game of Texas Hold'em is at 7 p.m. and followed by a 9 p.m game. The public is invited and registration is free.
Donate 2 Educate at Owen High School
From Oct. 22- Nov.5, Owen High School is partnering with Goodwill for a school fundraiser an all are invited to help the school. Please place your unwanted items inside the Goodwill trailer located in the school parking lot 6 a.m. - 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. The OHS PTSO will earn funds to support grants for teachers to attend professional development activities this school year.
The most needed items are clothing, accessories, linens, home decor, furniture, electronics. Mattresses, broken or stained items, TVs or building materials cannot be accepted. For more information, please contact the OHS front office at 686-3852.
Pickleball clinic in Montreat
Professional IPTPA Certified Pickleball instructor Russell Elefterion will be hosting Pickleball clinics at the Montreat Conference Center's Tennis Courts on Saturday, Oct. 20. Scheduled from 9-10 a.m. is a free pickleball clinic geared towards players that have never played the sport.
From 10-11:30 a.m. is an intermediate class followed by advanced pickleball clinic from 11:30-1 p.m. Intermediate clinics are $5 per person. To register and for more Info contact Coach Russell at email@example.com or (813) 298-2022.
Community Book Club meets
The Community Book Club sponsored by the Friends of the L. Nelson Bell Library at Montreat College will meet in the library at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
The book to be discussed is Gilead, a Pulitzer Prize winning novel, by Marilynne Robinson. Gilead is a remarkable book which speaks eloquently to the challenges of life and the importance of faith. Reviewers from all sectors have given it high marks for its beauty of language, the simplicity of the story, and and the profound wisdom of the central character, John Ames, a Congregational minister.
Shirley McIntosh will lead the discussion of this incredible gift of fiction. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Breakfast fundraiser on Chapel Road
Homer's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church will hold a breakfast fundraiser from 7-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 202 Chapel Road in Black Mountain. Food options for the meal, which costs $6, will include biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs, grits, sausage and bacon.

Annual Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue meeting
The Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department Inc. Annual Corporate Meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. The meeting will be at the Broad River Community Center located at 44 Broad River VFD Rd, Black Mountain. The agenda items include annual financial review; auditor’s report; review the past year; plans for the Departments future and election of two board members.
All Broad River fire district tax payers are encouraged to attend, see your tax dollars working to provide emergency services to you, your property, and the community. Get an update on the planned substation on the north end of our fire district
Homer's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church offers barbecue suppers
Barbecue suppers will be available from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Homer's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Plates are $7 and include barbecue, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, roll, drink and dessert.
All proceeds benefit the Homer's Chapel Gleaners Circle.
