Fire show will benefit Black Mountain Library
Lulu and Friends will put on a fire show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18 in the back parking lot of the Black Mountain Public Library (bring a chair). Donations will benefit the library. Lulu is Laura Lulu Edmonds, the library's youth services public librarian.
Area Quakers hold their annual yard sale
Rain or shine, the annual yard sale of Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting (Quaker) in Black Mountain will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the Quaker Meeting House, 137 Center Ave., Black Mountain, two blocks across from Black Mountain Primary School.
Follow the signs from East State Street to the sale, sited on the beautiful landscaped juncture of Flat Creek and the Swannanoa River. The sale will feature a bake sale, a small plant sale and some unusual and special items, as well as household items and furnishings. There will be lots of books.
Black Mountain Creatives holds first "Third Saturdays" market
The first Black Mountain Creatives "Third Saturdays" Art Market happens from 10 am.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 19 on Black Mountain Avenue. Local artists will sell paintings, woodwork, jewelry, potters, fiber arts, photography, digital arts, metal work, glass arts, sculptural works and more. There will be entertainment and local food vendors.
Swannanoa Community Yard Sale postponed until June 2
Because of this weekend's weather forecast, the twice-annual Swannanoa Community Yard Sale hs been moved from Saturday, May 19 to Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Swannanoa Ingles parking lot, 2299 U.S. 70. May is Friends of the Library membership month
All current members of the Black Mountain Friends of the Library are invited to renew their annual memberships this month. The Friends' support this year provided materials and programs for all area residents, including periodicals, large print books, and children’s programs.
Renewing and new members can join for $15 (families can join for $25). All memberships are annual memberships, due to renew each May. Visit the library or the Black Mountain Tailgate Market on Saturdays to join. Find Friends of the Library on Facebook to find upcoming events.
Businesses are invited to support the library
The Black Mountain Friends of the Library invites area businesses to support the library by becoming a Friend of the Library. May is membership month, and the Friends have launched a new opportunity for businesses to be part of the effort to support the library.
Business memberships are $50 annually, all of which stays in the community to provide periodicals, large print books, children’s programming and more to area residents. Participating businesses will be recognized on the BMTFOL Facebook page (with more than 200 followers) and will be provided a Friends sticker to apply to the front door of their business, car, or laptop to let the community know of their generosity.
In addition, business members will be recognized at the annual BMTFOL membership meeting on July 11. Membership forms are available at the library or on Saturdays at the Black Mountain Tailgate Market. For more, email FOLBlackMountain@gmail.com.
Duplicate Bridge Group has two winners May 8
The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain May 8 and had a great time. There were two winners. First place for North/South was David Hirsch/Roger Fenna. First place for East/West was Helen Kraus/Walt Tolley. Cheshire Fitness holds wearable technology seminar
Cheshire Fitness Club in Black Mountain will hold a free seminar about DorsaVi Wearable Sensor Technology from 1:40-3 p.m. Wednesday, May 23. The seminar, open to everyone, will demonstrate wearable technology utilizing the ViMove and ViPerform Movement Suites. Assessments will include low back function, knee control ability, functional movement screening and running analysis. The information session is presented by AVORA Physical Therapy.
Church holds "shower" to collect laundry supplies for ministry
Tabernacle United Methodist Church is holding a “community laundry shower” to collect laundry room supplies for “Hope For Tomorrow,” Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry’s transitional shelter for homeless women and children in Black Mountain. The event will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the church, 385 Tabernacle Road, Black Mountain.
East Asheville church holds weekend yard sale
Groce United Methodist Church, 954 Tunnel Road in East Asheville, is having a yard sale Friday-Saturday, June 1-2 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
Discovery Days Tour to explore town’s greenways
The Black Mountain Greenways Commission invites area residents to experience the local greenway trail system on Saturday, June 2 on the annual Discovery Days Tour. The tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the pavilion at Lake Tomahawk and will finish at the same location at noon.
The tour will include riding on town recreation department vans, with occasional stops to walk portions of the greenways. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and a hat.
