Ministry seeks donations for pantry, homeless shelter 

Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry's homeless shelter laundry and shower facilities are in need of towels and washcloths, HE laundry pods, dryer sheets, bottled water and drinks, snack bars and nutrition bars.  Please label items “Homeless” and drop off at the ministry, 101 N. Ridgeway Ave., Black Mountain.

The ministry's food pantry needs to restock with donations of pork and beans, black beans, red kidney beans, canned fruit, corn, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, bar soap and deodorant.  Drop off items at 101 N. Ridgeway Avenue, Black Mountain. Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to the ministry at P.O. Box 235, Black Mountain, NC 28711).  

"Tea with Harriet" celebrates one dynamic woman

On Saturday, May 12, history lovers, nature enthusiasts, and those who appreciate the tasty sweet and savory foods offered at a formal tea will gather at Whitemont Lodge for a special celebration of spring and ​the legacy of ​one of the Swannanoa Valley’s most honored women, Harriet Styles.​ ​

The pre-Mothers’ Day tea will be offered in two seatings, from 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. It will include savory, scone, and sweet courses, music, and a private tour of Whitemont Lodge and the surrounding gardens. Advance ticket purchase is required (the 2 p.m. seating is sold out).​ ​

Vendor registration opens for Swannanoa Yard Sale

Registration is open for vendors to sell their treasures at Swannanoa’s popular yard sale, to be held Saturday, May 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Swannanoa Ingles parking lot, 2299 U.S. 70. Ten- by 10-foot seller spaces are $10 each (bring your own tables).

Register by calling 828-581-9707 with your name, phone number and number of spaces you’d like to reserve. All proceeds from the sale help to support Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) work in the community.  

Auditions held for "The Black Mountain Radio Hour"

The Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts is holding auditions for its upcoming original radio drama and variety show "The Black Mountain Radio Hour."

Directed by Max Baron Reid, the production seeks three versatile character/voice actors to play multiple characters: man (age 40+) and woman (age 40+) of any ethnicity and an African American woman (age 30+). Auditions will be held Wednesday, May 16 from 6-8 pm and Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m.-noon. Rehearsals begin June 10 for production of recorded performances July 6-8 and July 13-15. Area Quakers hold their annual yard sale

Rain or shine, the annual yard sale of Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting (Quaker) in Black Mountain will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at 137 Center Ave., Black Mountain, two blocks across from Black Mountain Primary School. 

Follow the signs from East State Street to the sale, sited on the beautiful landscaped juncture of Flat Creek and the Swannanoa River. The sale will feature a bake sale, a small plant sale and some unusual and special items, as well as household items and furnishings. There will be lots of books.
