Design Driven Studio donates to charities through sales

Design Driven Studio at 102 Black Mountain Ave., Black Mountain will donate 10 percent of sales to local charities this month. The schedule is Thursday, Dec. 7, Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries; Thursday, Dec. 14, Bounty & Soul; and Thursday, Dec. 21, Black Mountain Home for Children. 

Swannanoa Library holds half-price book sale

The Swannanoa Library is having a half-price book sale through Friday, Dec. 22 during regular library hours. The sale includes fiction, nonfiction and books for juveniles and young adults. Dollar items will be 50 cents, half dollar books will be 25 cents and quarter books will be 10 cents. Each item in a set will be half its usual price. Anything over $1 will be half price too.

Yard sale helps Swannanoa Valley Montessori School

Swannanoa Valley Montessori School will hold a community yard sale from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 9 at Carver Community Center gym, 101 Carver Avenue. Proceeds will benefit the school. 

Harpers assemble to put on Christmas concert

The Mountain Folk Harpers Ensemble will perform a Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at Black Mountain Center for the Arts. The cost is $10.

Leading the ensemble is Celtic harpist Sue Richards, who teaches lessons at the arts center. This informal, multigenerational group of local and international harpers offers a holiday-themed performance that will feature solos, duets and ensemble pieces.

In addition to Richards, the ensemble includes Ann Bolton, Martha Hill, Teresa Hultquist, John Hickman, Linda Jackson, Howard Jackson, Jeanne Mason, Annelizabeth Evans and Jill Sagarin. For more or tickets, call 669-0930 or visit

Tickets are available for "It's a Wonderful Life"

Tickets are now on sale for the Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts production of "It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" by Joe Landry.

This lively, fun-for-the-whole-family show is based on the classic holiday movie, with a twist - it is staged as a live radio broadcast. It will be presented on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15,16 and 22, 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. For more or tickets, call 669-0930 or visit

Ministry looking for volunteers for Johnny Raines Christmas Program

Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries needs sponsors for the Johnny Raines Christmas Program.  If you would like to sponsor a family or hold a toy drive, contact the ministry at 669-9404. The ministry's team of “elves” will be taking applications to enroll families and matching sponsors through Friday, Dec. 8. The ministry also needs volunteers Dec. 11-21.  

Ministry sends out call to restock its shelves

Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry needs to restock its pantry so that it can help needy clients. Currently it needs canned goods (red kidney beans, pork and beans, pinto beans, mixed vegetables), ramen noodles, cooking oil, sugar, all-purpose flour, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, toilet paper, soap and feminine products.  Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to P.O. Box 235, Black Mountain, N.C 28711).  Drop off items at 101 N. Ridgeway Ave., Black Mountain.

Church holds its Children's Decoration Day
