Thomas Chapel serves up fish/chicken dinners
Get some down home cooking Thursday-Friday, Oct. 12-13 at the fish or chicken dinner sale at Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, 124 W. College St., Black Mountain. Hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The menu includes potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls and dessert (no sandwiches). The cost is $10 dinner, $12 combo. Call 669-2221 for delivery.
Charles Frazier book is next up for book club
The Swannanoa Valley Museum Book Club's October read, just in time for Halloween, is Charles Frazier’s Appalachian-noir novel, "Nightwoods." The club meets to discuss the book at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13 at the Black Mountain Public Library.
The Swannanoa Valley Museum Book Club meets regularly to read a list of titles that span fiction, nonfiction, poetry and prose related to local interest, history, and Appalachian heritage and culture. "Freud's Last Session" winds up this weekend
Tickets are available for "Freud’s Last Session" presented by the Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. The show stars Kelley Hinman and Matt Lutz and is directed by Callan White. Tickets are $20 for shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13–14. The matinee is 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15. There will be a period of discussion following the matinees.

Black Mountain Home for Children holds annual Fall Festival
Black Mountain Home for Children will hold its annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Highlights include free games and inflatables for the kids, a silent auction with 150-plus items, live music, barbecue by Butts on the Creek, wagon rides, a car and Jeep show, Ridin’ on Faith Ministries, and more. Event raises money for Christmas shoe boxes
Swannanoa First Baptist Church will hold an Operation Christmas Child rummage sale from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 in the parking lot of Allstate insurance on U.S. 70 in Swannanoa. The fundraiser for children's shoe boxes will have lots of treasure. All proceeds will go toward the shoe boxes.
Democrats hold meet-and-greet event at library
Democratic Precinct 34.1 is sponsoring a meet-and-greet event from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15 at Black Mountain Library to let voters meet Black Mountain candidates running this November. Scheduled to be there, as of last week, are Weston Hall, running for mayor, and Ryan Stone and Jeremie Konegni, running for aldermen.
Committee seeks help decorating for holidays
Black Mountain Town Square will soon be decorated for the holidays. The Black Mountain Beautification Committee coordinates the decorating and will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the town hall. Duplicate bridge group posts results from Oct. 3
The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain Oct. 3 and had a great time.
Coming in first were David Hirsch and Lynda Briggs. Coming in second were Myra Schoen and Peter Schoen. Coming in third were Helen Kraus and Elizabeth Lovejoy.

Christian ministry seeks blankets, men's pants
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry clients have started asking for blankets and the ministry has none. It needs blankets as well as other linens, such as towels and sheets. It also needs small appliances (toasters, slow cookers, coffee pots, etc.). It also needs men’s pants/jeans sizes 30 and 32 as well as men’s shoes (all sizes). The gospel quartet "FourEver His" will present a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 at Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church at the corner of Rockdale Avenue and Old N.C. 70. A love offering will be taken.

Join the Light Center on N.C. 9 south of Black Mountain for an Advance Prayer Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing Sunday, Oct. 29.
Homer's Chapel church to have barbecue fundraiser
Homer's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church is having a barbecue fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 4 to raise money for the Homer's Chapel Gleaners Circle. The event, from 4-6 p.m., is $7 and gets you barbecue, baked beans, potato salad, slaw, roll, drink and dessert. The church is at 202 Chapel Road, Black Mountain.
