How to put your garden to bed this winter

STAFF REPORTS

The not-so-dormant autumn season is a busy time for gardeners. Have you made your list of fall garden chores?

Jack Hurwitz waters the plots at the Dr.John Wilson community Garden in June.

"Putting Your Garden to Bed: Fall Garden Chores" is the name of the program that Beth Leonard will put on arom 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Mountain Horticultural Research Station at 455 Research Drive in Mills River. The talk is free, but registration is requested by calling 828-255-5522. Bring a brown bag lunch if you like.

Putting your garden to bed for the winter, and preparing it to thrive come spring, involves more than raking the leaves. This presentation will help you expand your list to include lawn repair, fall planting, optimum times to prune, fall insects, winter weeds and more.
