Downtown merchants to hold sidewalk sale
On Saturday, Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., several Black Mountain merchants will be holding a sidewalk sale. Participating merchants will be offering deals on new merchandise, as well as vintage, slightly used and unique items.
Runners can avoid injury with this workshop
Jason Gulley of Black Mountain Physical Therapy will offer a free workshop for runners, "Tips to Prevent Injury, " at Vertical Runner from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2. Space is limited. To register and learn more, call 669-6896.
Prostate group meets again in Asheville
Us TOO of WNC, a prostate cancer support forum for men, caregivers and family members, will meet Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Asheville, 5 Oak St. This month Dr. Scott Sech from Victoria Urological will present promising developments in treatment. Mark your calendars for November and December for Dr. Eric Kuehn from Mountain Radiation Oncology and Dr. Mehul Bhakta from Mission Health.

Help the pantry help the Valley’s residents
The Swannanoa Christian Ministry pantry has put out a call for donations that it will give qualifying Swannanoa Valley residents. Needed are these canned items: red kidney beans, pinto beans, pork and beans, green beans and corn. It also needs coffee, sugar, all-purpose flour, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, toilet paper; linens including sheets, blankets, and towels; coats, diapers (sizes 4, 5, and 6) and baby wipes. Drop off items at 101 N. Ridgeway Ave., Black Mountain. Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to P.O. Box 235, Black Mountain, NC 28711).

Owen High School Class of 1977 is getting together for its 40th reunion Friday-Saturday, Oct. 6-7 for various activities. Help Arc of Buncombe County celebrate anniversary
The Arc of Buncombe County, which serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is celebrating 60 years of work by inviting the public to its anniversary party 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 at the Asheville Event Center, 291 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville. The $250-for-two tickets include drinks, a silent and live auction and dinner, along with a raffle entry to win a $6,500 diamond package. There will be music and dancing. Tickets on sale for "Freud's Last Session"
Tickets are now on sale for "Freud’s Last Session" presented by the Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. Written by Mark St. Germain and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, the show stars Kelley Hinman and Matt Lutz and is directed by Callan White.

Support Hand in Hand before Owen High's homecoming
Hand in Hand will sponsor a fundraiser during Owen High School’s homecoming, Friday, Oct. 6. Come eat with Hand in Hand before the game and support Hand in Hand as it supports students in the Swannanoa Valley. The meal will be homemade chili or soup, cornbread, crackers, dessert and drink. Serving time is 4-7 p.m. at Grovestone Baptist Church.
