Parents invited to Black Mountain Swim Team meeting
Parents looking for more information about signing up their children for the Black Mountain Swim Team are invited to meetings at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27 and Thursday, May 18 at the Carver Center. Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church is holding a “down home cooking” fish or chicken dinner sale from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdy-Friday, April 27-28Come out and join us for an evening of fun, fellowship, entertainment and giving to support Swannanoa Valley Montessori School of Black Mountain, NC. The event begins at 4:00pm and runs until 7:00 pm and will include live music & dancing, food & drinks, student performances, raffle drawings, silent auction and more! There will be side entertainment for children through out the evening and a delicious BBQ buffet provided by Foothills Catering. Tickets are $20 per adult and $10 per child (children 3 and under are free) and includes the evening entertainments, food and drinks. Local photographer leads Pinhole Photo Day events
Local photographer Lynette Miller will lead two days of pinhole photography Friday, April 28 and Sunday, April 30 at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, 225 W. State St.
On April 28 at noon in the arts center’s theater space, Miller will explain pinhole photography and will help anyone interested make their own pinhole camera. Bring a sack lunch to this free lunch-and-learn event that will appeal to all levels of experience.
Sunday, April 30 is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. From 1-4 p.m., rain or shine, Miller will have a variety of pinhole cameras available and will guide participants in the steps to create a photograph. Friends of Black Mountain Library have book sale this weekend
Friends of Black Mountain Library Books Sale is Friday-Saturday, April 28-29. Friday from 4-7 p.m. is preview night for Friends of the Library members only; however, if you are not member you can join ($15) at the door. Sale hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
Ministry holds event to kick off building campaign
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry will kick off its capital campaign for transitional housing for the homeless from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at the ministry’s main office, 101 N. Ridgeway Ave., Black Mountain. A brief presentation program will begin at 2:30 p.m.
The “Plans to Give Hope and a Future” capital campaign will raise money to build, by the end of the year, eight small apartments for homeless women and children. The ministry plans to build eight 638-square foot, clustered apartments to help the families move from homelessness to homes.
Gospel fest raises money for Thomas Chapel access
The Original Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church is hosting a gospel music fest on Saturday April 29 at 5 p.m. The event, held at St. James Episcopal Church, 424 W. State St., Black Mountain, will feature musical groups and soloists from around the area.
Proceeds will go toward completing the chapel's handicap accessibility parking and walkway so that the “little church on the hill” can be used for events and programs upon request.
Tickets for the gospel music fest are $10 adults, $5 children and can be purchased in advance by contacting Renee at (828) 301-6701 or Sybil at (828) 230-3773. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door the day of the event.
Ten Thousand Villages helps support Bounty & Soul
During Montreat Landcare Committee’s annual Native Plant Sale and Show Saturday, April 29, Ten Thousand Villages in Montreat is partnering with Bounty & Soul to donate 15 percent of sales to the Swannanoa Valley nonprofit organization. Bounty & Soul’s mission is to create healthier communities by providing fresh healthy food, nutrition literacy and health and wellness resources for Swannanoa Valley residents.
Tennis lessons for kids are starting up
Black Mountain Tennis Association and the Black Mountain Recreation and Parks Department have tennis clinics coming up. KinderTennis, for children 3-6 years old and 8 and Unders will be held 5-5:45 p.m. for four Tuesdays in May beginning May 2. Ten and Unders will be held 5-5:45 p.m. every Thursday in May beginning May 4. To register, call 669-2052.
Black Mountain Tennis Association’s free Community Ball Machine Day will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Jimmie McSwain Tennis Courts. Sign up for half hour sessions that beginning at 10 a.m. Email jeub1234@gmail.com for time positions.
Art League seeks its earliest members for memories

Prostate cancer support groups to meet again
Us TOO of WNC, a prostate cancer support forum for men, caregivers and family members, will meet Tuesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Asheville on 5 Oak St. This month Jon Stokes will present information on ZERO Cancer programs.
