Friends hold events about Native American injustice
The Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting is hosting two public events on racial and religious injustice regarding Native Americans.
Navajo educator Mark Charles will lead discussions from 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 21 during “Truth-Telling on Racial Conflicts” and a film about the “The Doctrine of Discovery,” a legal domination framework still encoded in the U.S. legal system that gives Christian governments moral and legal rights to invade, seize and enslave non-Christians.
The April 21 event, free and open to all, will be at Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church, 101 Chapel Drive, Swannanoa. Donations will be welcome.
From 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 22, Charles will lead a workshop on “Decoding America’s Greatness” and “The Difference between Power and Authority.” The event, limited to 30 people, will be at the Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting, 137 Center Ave., Black Mountain. The fee, which includes lunch, is $30 by April 1 and $35 thereafter.

Ten Thousand Villages benefits Asheville GreenWorks
From noon-6 p.m. Friday, April 21, 15 percent of sales at Ten Thousand Villages Montreat will go to Asheville Green Works. GreenWorks recruits thousands of volunteers annually to engage in community grassroots projects such as tree planting, urban agriculture, environmental cleanup, anti-litter and waste reduction education, creation of green spaces, plus the care and preservation of Asheville’s rivers and trees. Through its work, Asheville has been designated as a Tree City USA for 36 years

Free outdoors movies begin in Swannanoa
Cinema on the Square, the Swannanoa community’s new free outdoor movie series, is coming to Grovemont Square (adjacent to the Swannanoa Library, 101 W.Charleston Ave.) at 7 p.m. Friday April 21 and May 19.
“The Lorax” will screen April 21, and “E.T.” will show on May 19. Movies begin at sundown; pre-movie festivities, including games, face painting and hula hooping, start at 7 p.m.
Bring a chair or blanket. Pizza, popcorn and baked goods will be available for purchase.
Cinema on the Square is produced by Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS), the Friends of the Swannanoa Library, and the Swannanoa Community Council.

First Baptist Church puts on a community fair, with games
“Our Community ... Our World” Fair is the name of a free community fair that First Baptist Church is putting on from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at the church.
The event is a celebration of the different cultures in the community, with games, music and foods from different countries.
There will also be a car care clinic and, for the children, a bouncy house, face painting, clowns, balloon animals, puppets and more.

Ladies Auxiliary serves breakfast to raise money
The Ladies Auxiliary at Homer’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church is putting on a breakfast fundraiswer at the church form 7-9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22. They will be serving scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits and gravy. The cost is $6. For deliveries, call Lisa at 713-5119.
Scouts’ spaghetti dinner will send them to Florida
Boy Scout Troop 42 is having a spaghetti supper from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22 to raise funds for its trip to Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. The supper - spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert - is at St. James Episcopal Church, 424 W. State St., Black Mountain. Broad River Fire Dept. holds annual pancake breakfast
The Broad River Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will hold its annual fundraiser pancake breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Saturday April 22 at the Broad River Community Center.
The breakfast includes homemade buttermilk pancakes with a wide variety of pancake toppings, baked apples, sausage, coffee, orange juice and milk to drink. The suggested donation is $5. The breakfast raises money that supports Broad River volunteer firefighters.
UR Light Center puts on concert, program
At the UR Light Center on Saturday, April 22, Michael Love and Richard Shulman will present “Music of the Twelve Rays,” a multisensory program from 10 a.m.-noon. At 6:30 p.m., “New Moon Drum Circle” facilitated by Jonna Rae Bartges meets outside near the labyrinth.

Montreat College puts on a free field day
Montreat College’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee is putting on a free field day for kids from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 23 at the college’s Black Mountain campus, 510 Vance Ave., Kids ages 13 and under and parents and families are invited. Events include soccer, dodgeball, races, jump ropes and dizzybat.
SVCM needs to restock pantry
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry needs to restock its pantry so it can give food to clients. It needs cans of red kidney beans, pork and beans, corn, fruit and mixed vegetables, as well as coffee, toothpaste, toothbrushes and shampoo. It also needs baby wipes and diapers (sizes 4, 5, and 6) as well as pull-ups (sizes 2T-5T). Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to PO Box 235). Drop off items at 101 N. Want to make room on your shelf for the new spring book releases and help Black Mountain Library? You can by donating some of your books for the upcoming Friends of Black Mountain Library book sale on Friday-Saturday, April 28-29.
All proceeds from the sale will support the monthly library programs and assist in purchasing children and large print books. Drop books off anytime at the Black Mountain Library (if you have a large volume of them, drop them off between April 24–27 at the Black Mountain Library Education Room, located in the rear of the library).
Gospel fest raises money for Thomas Chapel access
The Original Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church is hosting a gospel music fest on Saturday April 29 at 5 p.m. The event, held at St. James Episcopal Church, 424 W. State St., Black Mountain, will feature musical groups and soloists from around the area.
Proceeds will go toward completing the chapel’s handicap accessibility parking and walkway so that the “little church on the hill” can be used for events and programs upon request.
Tickets for the gospel music fest are $10 adults, $5 children and can be purchased in advance by contacting Renee at (828) 301-6701 or Sybil at (828) 230-3773. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door the day of the event.
Tennis lessons for kids are starting up
Black Mountain Tennis Association and the Black Mountain Recreation and Parks Department have tennis clinics coming up. KinderTennis, for children 3-6 years old and 8 and Unders will be held 5-5:45 p.m. for four Tuesdays in May beginning May 2. Ten and Unders will be held 5-5:45 p.m. every Thursday in May beginning May 4. To register, call 669-2052.
Black Mountain Tennis Association’s free Community Ball Machine Day will be from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 6 at Jimmie McSwain Tennis Courts. Sign up for half hour sessions that beginning at 10 a.m. Email jeub1234@gmail.com for time positions.
Quakers hold their annual yard sale
Don’t miss the annual yard sale of the Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting (Quaker) from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday May 6 at the meetinghouse at 137 Center Ave. in Black Mountain (near Scotland and Ridgeway Avenues.) For sale will be all kinds of interesting items and a grand collection of books.
Researcher doing work on bone health
As part of the requirements for completing a Master of Health Science degree program at Western Carolina University, Susan Dannenberg will be conducting a research project designed to measure the impact of a bone health education program in women 50 years of age or older. She is looking for volunteers to sign on as research participants. The program will be run May and June at the Black Mountain Library Community Education Room. League puts on two art workshops
Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League is putting on a three-day drawing and watercolor workshop Friday-Sunday June 2-4 at the Red House Studios and Galleries. Participants will meet from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.
The workshop is for those with no experience in drawing or watercolor and those who want to refresh their skills. Stephanie Sipp and Donna Davis will be the instructors.
