BLACK MOUNTAIN - A woman has been charged with second degree murder without regard after police say she intentionally struck a man with her car in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel on Flat Creek Road.

Heather Nicole Johnson, 32, of Asheville purposefully struck Michael Grady Locklear with her Kia Soul in the early morning hours of Aug. 7, according to arrest records.

After initially refusing medical aid, Locklear died in Mission Hospital on Aug. 9 or 10, a search warrant said.

Surveillance footage

Black Mountain police responded to a reported hit and run at the Super 8 Motel at about 1 a.m. Aug. 7. Johnson admitted to hitting Locklear, search warrants say, but claimed Locklear was "beating her with a bamboo cane."

Police reviewed surveillance footage from the parking lot, which appeared to show Johnson "turned her wheels toward Michael Locklear, and accelerated toward him, collided with him knocking into other vehicles," the search warrant said. Locklear appeared to be "walking away with his back turned when he was struck."

"After striking Michael Locklear, the suspect back(ed) up and (drove) forward out of the parking lot without stopping to notify authorities," the search warrant said.

Johnson is in custody at the Buncombe County Jail and is eligible for a $500,000 secured bond.

The victim

Locklear was "not very cooperative" with Black Mountain police officers when they arrived on the scene, the search warrant said, and refused transport to the hospital from an EMS unit.

Later that morning, Locklear asked his girlfriend to call EMS, saying he was "hurting 'really bad,'" according to a second search warrant.

Locklear was transported to Mission Hospital, where he died "sometime" on Aug. 9 or Aug. 10. Initial findings from an autopsy conducted on Aug. 12 "show that the death of Michael Grady Locklear was the result of injuries sustained during the collision between him and the vehicle driven by Heather Nicole Johnson," the search warrant said.
