Owen alum Heather Martin named teacher of the year for McDowell High School

Heather B. Martin, 28, was named the 2019 Teacher of the Year at McDowell High School on Feb. 6.

Teachers are nominated for the award by staff at the school, which is located in Marion. Faculty vote for the winner.

Marin is a Spanish teacher at the school and currently in her sixth year. She graduated from Owen High School in 2009 and received her degree from Appalachian State University.

She is the wife of Black Mountain firefighter Travis Martin and the mother of Harper, 3 and Burke, who will be arriving in July. Martin is the daughter of Ben and DeeDee Buchanan and the granddaughter of Edd and Paula Buchanan, all of Black Mountain.
