Meet New York Times bestselling local author William R. Forstchen at a reception and book signing from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9, at Europa, 125 Cherry St., Black Mountain.

In Forstchen’s John Matherson trilogy, “One Second After,” “One Year After” and “The Final Day,” a man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war that sends the nation back to the Dark Ages. Although fictional, the three novels are set in Black Mountain, and the surrounding area and feature local landmarks.

Forstchen holds a Ph.D. in history from Purdue University with specializations in military history and the history of technology. He serves as faculty fellow and professor of history at Montreat College.
