Open Table enjoys first anniversary
Volunteers can hardly believe how quickly 12 months have passed since they have been coming together every Wednesday to prepare and serve a free community meal at the Black Mountain Open Table.
On March 18, 2015, this ecumenical group of volunteers from local churches opened its doors to anyone desiring a free, hot, nutritious meal and a warm, friendly place to meet with friends and get to know neighbors.
“Our mission is to not only provide a place for food and friendship for all, but to reach out and address food insecurity and social isolation issues many of our neighbors experience,” said Pastor Mike Macdonald of Black Mountain United Methodist Church, where the meal is provided each week from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Last week, for the first time, volunteers at the outreach did not have to prepare the meal. Instead, Givens Highland Farms honored them and the ministry by preparing and sponsoring the anniversary meal, which served 125 participants.
“The food was absolutely delicious, and they even prepared a wonderful anniversary sheet cake that made the celebration extra special,” said Paul Drummond, Open Table volunteer chef.
“We are deeply grateful to Givens.”
