The Regional Science Olympiad, hosted and staged by UNC Asheville on Feb. 27, brought young scientists from 29 middle and high schools across Western North Carolina together to compete in 46 events.

Organization and judging for the competition was provided by UNC Asheville faculty, students, alumni and staff, and by volunteers from many other schools, businesses and organizations. Here’s how Owen Middle and High School students fared:

Owen Middle School

  • Denis Luchinin and Robbie Branock took fifth place in the Dynamic Planet B event
  • Emily Hothschild and Leo Noteboom took fourth place in the Green Generation B event

Owen High School

  • Alex Morrow took fourth place in the Amazing Mechatronics C event
  • Ethan Blevins and Sean Douglas took third place in the Astronomy C event
  • Kaitlin Morris and Rachel Beaver took took fourth place in the Bridge Building C event
  • Ben Warlick and Katherine Huntley took second place in the Disease Detectives C event
  • Nick Murphy and Sean Douglas took third place in the Green Generation C event
  • Kaitlin Morris and Rachel Beaver took second place in the Wright Stuff event
