Owen marching band passes hat to get to championship
The Charles D. Owen High School Marching Band will accompany more than 100 bands from across the United States to compete in one of the nation’s most prominent marching band competitions, Bands of America Grand National Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Nov. 11-14.
Known as “The Pride of the Valley,” the 72-member band is asking Black Mountain and the surrounding Swannanoa Valley community to help it raise the money necessary to attend the four-day championship competition.
“Attending this championship is like taking a team to the Super Bowl of band competitions,” said Minnix, Owen’s band director since 2010. “This is the chance of a lifetime for these students, one they will never forget.”
The band needs to raise about $12,000 for the trip. The band is looking for businesses and individuals to sponsor the trip with monetary or in-kind donations. Monetary donations can be made online at gofundme.com/owen
highschoolband or mailed to P.O. Box 1060, Swannanoa, NC 28778. Donations of product, gift certificates or services will be offered back to the community through an online auction, with 100 percent of proceeds go toward the trip to Indianapolis. For more, contact Tracie Perkins, Owen Band Boosters president, at (828) 230-6364 or email@example.com.
The band will hold a BoosterBeds fundraiser from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 7 and 1-5 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Owen High School gym.
