Ned Henry Garrison

of Black Mountain

Ned Henry Garrison, 83, of Black Mountain, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015.

Ned worked at Beacon for 43 years. He was a veteran of the US Army, a member of Broad River Volunteer Fire Department since 1977 and active for many years as a Lieutenant, and a member of Broad River Baptist Church. Ned was a loving member of the community and never met a stranger. He was also a loving father and faithful husband.

Ned is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Beulah Garrison; wife, Elizabeth Garrison; and sisters, Hattie Lou Garrison and Martha Regan.

He is survived by his children, Ned and Linda, Ann and Troy, Susy and Harvey, Betty and Keith, Julia and Matt; grandchildren, Trey Frye, Craig McGinnis and Ashley Combs; great-grandchildren, Christian Helms, Madeline, Andrew and Christopher McGinnis; siblings, Earline, George, Bill, Thad and Rowena.

A Celebration of Life Service was held Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Broad River Baptist Church. Burial followed in Broad River Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at Harwood Home for Funerals.

Lillie Dotson

“Granny” Halford

of Black Mountain

Lillie Dotson “Granny” Halford, 90, of Black Mountain went to be with her Lord Tuesday, September 29, 2015.

A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late James and Dula Hudgins Dotson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Halford; son, Randy Halford; granddaughter, Brooke Freeman; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Halford; as well as 12 brothers and sisters.

Lillie retired from Beacon Mfg. After retirement, she loved to take rides, canning, cooking, her flowers, and most importantly, her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Marie (Charles) Freeman; sons, Dean Halford and Ronnie Halford (Glenda); grandchildren, Steve (Joyce), Marshall (Connie), Danny (Tracy), Kevin, Kim (Darren), Bryan, Scott, Eric (Melinda), and Colton; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special nephew, Ray Conner.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Meadowbrook Free Will Baptist Church with Reverends Randy Stone and James Williams officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Memorial Park. Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

The family received friends Friday, October 2, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at Harwood Home for Funerals. Arrangements are by Harwood Home for Funerals, harwood homeforfunerals.com.

Myrtle Callahan

Riceof Swannanoa

Myrtle Callahan Rice, 92, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 27, 2015.

She was a native of Rockingham County and had lived in Swannanoa over 60 years. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Octie Honeycutt Callahan. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Rice; sisters, Beulah Crain and Bonnie Ree Callahan; brothers, Dan and Paul Callahan and son in law, Ned Williams.

She is survived by her daughters, Faye Williams, Marie Davis (Larry), and Shirley Swindle (Freddie), all of Swannanoa, Betty Buff (Jim) of Fairview; son, Joe Rice (Rhonda) of Swannanoa; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service was held Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 6 p.m. at Grassy Branch Baptist Church of which she was a member. Visitation immediately followed the service. Pastor Ken Sausedo and Rev. Kenny Davis officiated.

Burial was Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Ruby Lee

Phillips Pruitt

of Black Mountain

Ruby Lee Phillips Pruitt, 95, of Black Mountain, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center.

Born April 7, 1920 in Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Ossie Phillips and Alice Ogle Phillips. She is also preceded in death by two of her children, Elwood and Virgil (Charlotte).

Mrs. Pruitt enjoyed many things, including sewing, growing flowers, decorating and cooking. Being always young at heart, she always had great joy when greeting people, and loved her family very much.

Survivors include her children, Lewis (Genevie) of Black Mountain, Russell (Shelby) of Old Fort, Zelma of Leicester, and Hoyt (Jean) of Mountain Home; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 3 in the Chapel of Penland Family Funeral Home in Swannanoa, with a visitation held one hour prior. Committal services followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her son, Russell, for all the love and care he has shown his mother over the years.
