Black Mountain adds GIS map to its website

Buncombe County property information and corresponding zoning designations for land in Black Mountain can now be viewed on the town’s website through a link to a geographic information system.

The map shows general information about each parcel of land within the town limits while using a color-coated overlay for how the property is zoned. The map can be viewed on the town’s website at townofblackmountain.org under the “GIS Information” link.

Planning director Josh Harrold said the mapping process took about six months to complete and was done by Land of Sky Regional Council.

“We’ve worked really closely with Land of Sky, which is our council of government for Buncombe County and all of the municipalities in Buncombe County,” he said. “They have a GIS department, and they provide these (mapping) services to towns that may not have the resources or time to work on something like this.”

The map also allows users to add or remove layers that provide information on greenways, hydrants and building footprints, among other information.
