Golf tournament pairs charity with some fun

The fifth annual Bear Cub Classic Golf Tournament to raise funds for Black Mountain Home for Children will be Wednesday, Sept. 16, at The Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher. Sponsored by Grove Stone & Sand, the event kicks off with breakfast and a presentation at 8:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start. Individuals are $100, hole sponsors are $1,000, and a breakfast sponsorship is available for $3,500. Call 686-3451 or visit BlackMountainHome.org for a registration form.

Men, women needed for the play ‘Bell Book and Candle’

The Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts is having auditions for its November production of “Bell Book and Candle.” The auditions will be 6 p.m. Sept. 8 and 10 a.m. Sept. 12. Needed are three men and two women for this bewitching comedy written in 1950 by John Van Druten. Call for an appointment.

Draft horses, teams to plow at Warren Wilson College

Plow Day at Warren Wilson College is a family event demonstrating traditional draft horse field work and logging. Teams of horses from the surrounding area come to Warren Wilson College to help campus crews plow and to demonstrate their expertise in the art of working horses.

The college’s 16th annual Fall Plow Day will be Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Other events include kids games, a logging competition, a cake walk with live music, campus craft and food vendors. A barbecue lunch will be served starting at noon. Open to the public, admission is $3 (and free for Warren Wilson students and kids under the age of 5). Follow signs near the WWC campus for parking.

Recovery group featured in state rally

The Western Regional Recovery Rally at Lake Junaluska’s open air gym from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 19 will celebrate September, which is Recovery Month. This is a statewide affair. so please go and show your support. Celebrate Recovery, which meets weekly in Black Mountain, is one of the programs showcased.

Celebrate Recovery offers free childcare and a free dinner, worship music, open sharing and 12-step study groups. It meets Tuesday evenings at Mountain View Church, 2221 North Fork, Right Fork Road, Black Mountain. For more, call Connie at 669-1981.

Used book sale to benefit local charities

The Good Books for Good Works used book sale at St. James Church, 424 W. State St., Black Mountain on Sept. 24-27 will raise money for charities in the Swannanoa Valley, including Habitat for Humanity, Black Mountain Counseling Center, Bounty & Soul food pantry, Ministry of Hope and Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry.

For sale will be used books of all kinds - mysteries, cooking, history, spiritual, children’s, non-fiction and CDs, all priced at $1 or $2.

During the sale - held noon-6 p.m. Sept. 24, noon-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 26 and noon-4 p.m. Sept. 27 - there will be a coffee bar with available homemade goodies.

Knitters and crocheters meet at Highland Farms

The Highland Farms group of the WNC Knitters and Crocheters for Others will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.

The group has been making handmade items for more than 15 years, donating its creations to 18-20 local charities. It makes a variety of items, such as afghans, men’s and women's hats, scarves, baby hats and booties, mittens, knitted dolls, sweaters and dishcloths. All skill levels are welcome.

Ascending Fitness launches new contest

Ascending Fitness is launching a new “Win by Losing Right” contest on Sept. 9.

Sign-ups and orientations are happening this week. Prizes of $50, $75, $100, $250, and $500 will be awarded to at least five top finishers. Points are awarded both for healthy weight loss and for healthy behaviors.

Free workshop will get you motivated

Nancy Grojean will present a free, one-hour, motivational workshop at Ascending Fitness in Black Mountain for anyone who is interested in losing weight, getting in shape and creating long-term habits that support health.

The workshop will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 and 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The workshop, open to all, will engage participants in handwritten exercises designed to inspire and motivate.

It will also provide tips and tools they can use to make meaningful change.

Ministry hopes to restock its shelves

Pantry shelves at Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry are very low. The ministry needs canned fruit, green beans, red kidney beans, pork and beans/baked beans, sugar (small bags), peanut butter, mixed vegetables, Ramen noodles, pancake mix, toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo, soap, baby wipes, linens (towels, sheets, spreads, blankets) and diapers in sizes 4, 5 and 6.

Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome. Drop off items at 101 N. Ridgeway Ave., Black Mountain.

Showers cancels town hall meeting

Black Mountain alderman Carlos Shower’s Town Hall meeting this Thursday at the Black Mountain Library has been canceled because of the Labor Day holiday.

Gilliam reunion set for September

The John Harris Gilliam family reunion will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Broad River Community Center on N.C. 9. Lunch will be served about 12:30 p.m.

John Harris Gilliam and his wife Molly Kirklin had nine children. All descendants are encouraged to attend and bring a covered dish for lunch and visit with relatives.

Bee Tree to hold 136th annual picnic

The 136th annual Bee Tree Community Picnic is set for Saturday, Sept. 5 at Bee Tree Christian Church.

The crowd gathers at 11 a.m., a special program begins at noon and the much-anticipated lunch starts at 1 p.m.

Bring food, chairs, family and friends, along with stories to share.

The wall hanging created from last year’s quilt squares will be raffled at this year’s picnic.

Wine, conversation and some local art

The second to last Stroll & Sip happens from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 at participating shops throughout downtown Black Mountain.

The wine and conversation event takes in gallery/show places including Chifferobe, Mountain Nest Gallery of Art and Handcrafts tn Nest, CW Moose, Visions of Creation and The Curiosity Shoppe, which will host a reception for local artist Jim Watts.
