Warren Wilson prof named as scholar
Annie Jonas, professor and chair of the education department at Warren Wilson College, is an inaugural Engaged Faculty Scholar with the North Carolina Campus Compact, which supports outstanding faculty and encourages them to share their service-learning expertise with fellow educators.
Jonas is one of only two selected for the one-year program from a competitive field of applicants from private and public universities across N.C.
As an Engaged Faculty Scholar, Jonasis focusing her attention on helping first-year students examine and clarify their role as citizens in a democratic society. Jonas will work with faculty to incorporate civic engagement through service learning in first-year seminar courses and community partnerships.
In addition, she will serve as a consultant supporting faculty engagement at another institution, yet to be determined, in the Campus Compact network.
Jonas received the Andy Summers Award for Excellence in Service Learning in 2013. She holds a doctorate in education from Western Carolina University, a master’s degree in education from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Guilford College.
Sisters of Mercy to open East Asheville location
Asheville-based Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care has announced it is opening a fifth location, this one convenient to customers in East Asheville, Swannanoa, Black Mountain and the surrounding communities. The new location, projected to open mid 2016, will be at 1278 Tunnel Road, nearly a mile east of the VA Hospital.
A groundbreaking is scheduled for 4 p.m. July 29.
Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care treats everything from cuts, strains and broken bones to fevers, mild allergic reactions and skin irritations. It also offers X-rays, tetanus vaccinations and lab work.
No appointment is necessary, most insurance plans are accepted and financial aid is available.
