Montreat is ready to celebrate July 4

From staff reports

Montreat Conference Center is putting on a big Fourth of July celebration again this year.

The annual Montreat Gait 5K run will start at the Montreat Gate at 7 a.m. and go up to West Virginia Terrace before heading back to the gate. The race will be accompanied by a shorter walk, which also begins at the gate at 7 a.m. There is no entrance fee, registration or T-shirt.

The Montreat parade starts at 10:30 a.m. (participants should line on Geneva Place at Appalachian Way by 10 a.m.). After the parade and following the flag-raising ceremony, catered lunches ($10) of barbecue pork or chicken sandwiches and fixings by Red Radish will be available on the porch of the Walkup Building from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (tickets, available at the Montreat gift shop and at Red Radish-To-Go in Black Mountain, must be bought with cash or checks by July 2).

At 2 p.m., there’s an old-timers softball game on Welch Field. From 2-4 p.m., there will be games on Anderson and Moore Center fields. The square dance will be 7-9:30 p.m.
