Gentry Heating & Cooling helps SVCM tackle hunger

From staff reports

The Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry Walk for Hunger Relief Steering Committee is busy making plans for the 2015 walk to take place Oct. 11 beginning at First Baptist Church in Black Mountain.

"We're blessed this year with a most generous offer from a local business," said SVCM director Renae Brame. "In addition to providing up to $3,000 to purchase T-shirts for the event, Gentry Heating and Cooling has agreed to match dollar for dollar all business sponsorships.

"Last year 31 businesses provided $4,450 in T-shirt sponsorships - $100 for business name, or $250 for business name and logo. Sponsors can feel good knowing that twice the amount they donate will be used to purchase food for the ministry's food pantry.

During the first six months of this year, the ministry provided food to an average 388 households each month, Brame said. Although most of the food is donated, SVCM spends an average of $3,636 per month for food. "Sponsorships help put food on the tables of families and individuals who are living in situations of poverty," Brame said.

"I want to challenge our local businesses to dig deep and make a huge impact this year," said Duane Gentry, president of Gentry Cooling and Heating. "Feeding the hungry is not just something nice to do; it's a distinct part of sharing the gospel. The Walk for Hunger Relief is a wonderful opportunity to take care of those less fortunate in our community."

"We want to thank Duane for his generosity," said Brame. "This is an extraordinarily generous donation, and it's hard to express just how helpful it will be."

The Walk for Hunger Relief Steering Committee wants to thank the businesses for their support through the years. It welcomes all businesses to join it in its efforts to ensure everyone in the Swannanoa Valley has adequate food.
