Special to Black Mountain News

August is back to school month, so the Swannanoa Valley Museum is featuring photographs from its archives focused on local education. This 1927 photograph shows Swannanoa High School’s graduating class. The graduates are, from left to right, Sidney Wilfong, Helen Reighard, Mary Grace Baldwin, Ada Morgan, Eva Padgett, Ruth Johnson, Mary Coggins, and Wayne Stephenson. Beginning in 1926, the Swannanoa High School was located on Old U.S. 70 and served white students in grades 8-12 until Swannanoa and Black Mountain’s high schools were consolidated, with Charles D. Owen High School opening to students in 1955. The building that once served as the Swannanoa High School is now the Buncombe County Community High School.
