Valley Rewind: The Swannanoa School in the 1920s

Students pose in front of the Swannanoa School in the 1920s.

In this photo from about 1920, students pose in front of the Swannanoa School. At the time this photo was taken, about 100 students attended the school which was a significantly larger facility than the previous one-room schoolhouses that had dotted the valley. Their teacher was Candler native Circo Owenby. Many students at the time of this photograph bore surnames common to the Swannanoa Valley including Davidson, Patton and Alexander. We at the Swannanoa Valley Museum believe that this school was located between present-day U.S. 70 and Interstate 40, near the Swannanoa Post Office.
