Owen High girls basketball team continues undefeated winning streak
The Owen High girls basketball team defeated Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy to continue its 3-0 undefeated winning streak.
Junior Maesyn Gardner lead the Warlassies to a 58-19 victory over Thomas Jefferson, scoring 19 of the team's points. Gardner scored two of Owen's three successful 3-point shots.
"Maesyn is one of my juniors that's returning," said coach Chasity Simpson. "She's a solid player all around."
Owen took an early lead of 11-0. Thomas Jefferson scored its first point from a free throw, ultimately ending the first quarter behind Owen 16-3.
The Warlassies continued to increase their lead in the second quarter. With three minutes left in the half, a three-point play by Mia McMurry after a foul put the home team up 27-7.
Point guard McMurry and senior Bailee Worley scored nine points each. Senior Mattie Lehman scored eight, including the team's final successful 3-pointer.
Both teams began the third quarter playing hard defense with a full court press. Gardner made her second 3-pointer of the night, putting Owen up 42-17 halfway through the third quarter.
The Warlassies took off once again in scoring with a series of blocks and steals to seal the win. Owen went 3 for 6 in 3-point shots and had 16 offensive rebounds and 14 defensive rebounds.
"It's a good win," Simpson said. "It's a good start for our girls to have a 3-0 start to the season but there's still room for improvement. Keep going like we're 0-3."
