3 charged in murder of 44-year-old man shot to death in Buncombe County home
Three people have been charged with the murder of Boyce Shane Plemmons, 44, who was shot to death Sept. 26 at a residence on Dryman Mountain Road.
Willie James Byrd, 24, of Cobb County, Georgia; Carmen Renee Gillepsie, 45, of Asheville; and Cross Lamarr Beaver, 22, of Murphy, were charged with first-degree murder.
Byrd and Gillepsie were arrested Oct. 5 at the Ramada Inn in Asheville and charged with multiple drug and gun offenses, according to a Sheriff's Office press release. They are currently incarcerated at the Buncombe County jail.
On Oct. 11, they were also charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and a felony count of breaking and entering.
The same day, Beaver was arrested by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and charged with the same offenses. He has not yet been transferred to Buncombe County and is currently being held without bond at the Cherokee County jail.
Byrd is being held without bond and is set to appear in court Oct. 27. Gillepsie is being held without bond and will appear Nov. 22.
Beaver's court date was not available on the NC Judicial Branch website.
“Thank you to our Major Case Unit for their excellent investigative work in this case that led across WNC and into another state,” Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller said in the release.
According to Sheriff's Office arrest warrants, Byrd and Gillepsie broke into a residence on Dry Mountain Road, also referred to as Ben Lippen Road by the Sheriff's Office, "with the intent to terrorize or injure the occupant of the building."
They then threatened Plemmons with a handgun and stole his $70 cell phone before shooting him to death, the warrants state.
Plemmons’ death marks the third homicide the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has investigated in 2021, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Aaron Sarver. Suspects have been charged with first-degree murder in all three cases.
