This circa 1920s photograph from the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center's archives shows the Robert J. Lewis funeral home on Sutton Avenue in Black Mountain, along with The People's Bank (the one-story building at far right), and the New York Cafe (the two-story brick building at center). In 1916, Robert J. Lewis, "funeral director and embalmer" purchased the Sutton Avenue funeral home. Today, the building in which it was housed no longer stands, but many historic buildings with a dark or tragic past remain in the Swannanoa Valley today. Learn about them through the Haunted Valley Rally, a haunted driving tour of the Swannanoa Valley taking place on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24.
