Make quilts with the Linus Project
A group of sewers and non-sewers who enjoy helping make quilts and other items for children and adults at Mission and in the community is seeking people to join. The group focuses on children’s quilts, which are given out by the Regional Linus Project Group to children in crisis in the local area. The group also pins quilts, sorts donated fabric, stuffs pillows, and more for others in need.
This month the group meets at 1:30-3 p.m. Friday, May 25 on the lower level of the Lakeview Center for Active Aging at Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain. No experience is necessary. Fabric has been donated and experienced quilters are available to teach and help out. There is no charge. A sewing machine is not needed unless you want to sew some pillowcases. Montreat College music instructor is part of this concert
Montreat College music instructor Sharon Lawrence is first violinist and artistic director of the Rutherford Chamber Consort, which is giving free chamber music concerts at 7 p.m. Friday, May 25 at First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton and 4 p.m. Sunday, May 27 at Biltmore United Methodist Church in Asheville. Donate to Goodwill and help Owen High School
After doing your spring cleaning and finding items around the house and yard that you want to donate, bring them to the Goodwill trailer parked at Owen High School until May 29. This is a fundraiser put on by Goodwill Industries that awards schools 25 cents per pound. Call the school at 686-3852 if you have heavy items and someone can assist. Funds go toward teacher/staff professional development expenses.
Duplicate bridge group posts results from May 15
The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain May 15 and had a great time. Coming in first were David Hirsch/Roger Fenna. Coming in second were Lynda Briggs/Myra Schoen. Coming in third were Bob Kelly/Ron Gibson. The game is free on Tuesday nights. Swannanoa Community Yard Sale postponed until June 2
Because of this weekend's weather forecast, the twice-annual Swannanoa Community Yard Sale hs been moved from Saturday, May 19 to Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Swannanoa Ingles parking lot, 2299 U.S. 70. Buckeye Baptist Church vacation Bible school starts June 10

First Baptist Church vacation Bible school starts June 17
First Baptist Church in Black Mountain is hosting "Shipwrecked ... Rescued by Jesus," a vacation Bible school, from 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, June 17-21. Registration is 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16. Enjoy balloons and ice cream while you visit and register your child or children.
