The Black Mountain Beautification Committee has awarded 2018 Seed Money grants to The Old Depot Association and St. James Episcopal Church.

The Old Depot Association will be constructing raised planter beds with perennials and shrubs for the area between the depot platform and the railroad tracks.  The church will be adding a new Victoria Magnolia to the garden site surrounding its sign on N.C. 70.

Sarah Vekasi and Martha Johnson, board members of the Old Depot Association, received the award for their project. Tom Bailey, Sue Murray and the Rev. Judith Whelchel received the award for the Episcopal church.

There were 10 applicants for the awards this year. The Black Mountain Beautification Committee was inspired by the interest in making Black Mountain even more beautiful, it said.

“It was a very challenging decision as we tried to review the applications with a mind as to how the available monies can best be used, and how they fit in to our mission statement," said Lisa Wasoski, Seed Money committee chairperson. "This year’s applicants had wonderful proposals, and we encourage them, as well as others, to apply for our awards in 2019.”
