Owen High holds a Service Learning Fair
Owen High School is having a Service Learning Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 6 and is inviting organizations to explain their mission to students and parents who may want to learn more. The fair, meant to build empowering community relations, will be at the school's media center from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Organizations aren't required to be there the whole time, and time for lunch and supper are built into the schedule. Owen High Advisory Council changes meeting date
The Owen High School Advisory Council meeting date has been changed from Tuesday, Feb. 6 to Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. in the Media Center.
Ministry seeks items for its food pantry
The Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry pantry for its clients needs restocking, the ministry says. Here's what it needs: canned goods (red kidney beans, pork and beans, black beans, corn, vegetable soup, chicken broth, tomato products and mixed vegetables), coffee, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, bar soap, deodorant, toilet paper and diapers (sizes 5 and 6). Monetary donations designated to food are also welcome (send to the ministry at P.O. Box 235, Black Mountain, NC 28711). Drop items off at 101 N. Ridgeway Ave.
Duplicate bridge group posts results from Jan. 23
The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain and had a great time.
Tied for first were Larry Pearlman/Dan McGaughey and Linda Briggs/Ron Gibson. Coming in second were Myra Schoen/Peter Schoen. Coming in rhird were Liz Ream/Hubert Ream.

Babies and Boomers benefit from church's lending closet
Do you need a car seat for a child? A walker for a friend or a loved one? First Baptist Church Black Mountain operates a “Babies and Boomers” equipment lending closet. Located at 130 Montreat Road in Black Mountain, the closet has a wide variety of car seats, bath chairs, toddler beds, Pack-n-Play playpens, walkers (regular and rolling), wheelchairs, bedside toilets, crutches and more.
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry frequently receives donations of baby and medical equipment, which it passes on to the lending closet at First Baptist. This works out well, as the ministry has no room to store these types of items but often has clients who need them.

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts welcomes to its stage favorites Zoe & Cloyd on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. This charming young couple - renowned fiddler and vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist John Cloyd Miller - have come into their own in front of Black Mountain audiences and continue to grow as they celebrate their second full-length album "Eyes Brand New."

Get your cholesterol checked Feb. 14
Givens LifeMinistries will provide cholesterol screening from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Swannanoa United Methodist Church, 216 Whitson Ave., Swannanoa. The cost is $15. Fasting the night before is required. With a finger-stick blood sample and blood pressure check, you’ll have your total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, ratio and glucose results in five minutes. Black Mountain Primary plans kindergarten orientation
Black Mountain Primary School welcomes all new kindergartners with an orientation from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10. Registration is 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, April 26. Call 669-2645 for an appointment.
