Man charged with stealing scooter

ASHEVILLE - Police arrested an Asheville man Tuesday morning who they say stole a scooter and attempted to steal a motor vehicle, according to arrest records with the Asheville Police Department. 

Todd Marshall Clinger, 32, was charged with attempted common law robbery, breaking and entering, larceny of a motor vehicle, injury to personal property, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to arrest warrants. 

Police responded to the 200-block of South French Broad Avenue around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday where they say Clinger broke into a residence, warrants state. He caused damage to the left rear tail light and paint damage to a vehicle belonging to the person's residence he broke into, police say. 

He also took a 2012 scooter, valued at $1,000, and also attempted to take a Chevrolet Tahoe, valued at $20,000, according to police. He threatened the owner of the Chevrolet Tahoe "by means of an assault upon him consisting of putting him in fear of bodily harm by the threat of violence," warrants state. 

Police say he was in possession of a pill bottle that had been made into a pipe to smoke cocaine. 

Bond was set at $75,000 secured. He was scheduled to appear in Buncombe County District court Wednesday.
