Christian reading room opens on Broadway

In what used to be a Laundromat in town, Lynette Macrae has opened a room for prayer and Christian TV.

Our Prayer Room/Reading Room Jeremiah 33:3 - that's it's name - is on the first floor of the building at 131 Broadway Street in Black Mountain.

Open every day 11 a.m.-7 p.m., it’s a place for people for people read Christian literature, pray and be together, she said. With comfortable hand-me-down furniture, it looks like someone’s  living room. It’s been open about three weeks.

“We got many (visitors) initially, mostly people working in businesses around us,” Macrae said. "We’ve met some neat people, mostly from the immediate area. Everyone’s been saying 'this is great, we’re glad you’re doing this.'”

She’ll have an open house from 5-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 9-10. Opening a Christian reading room is something Macrae has always wanted to do, she said. She’d been living in Scotland for 25 years when she came back to Black Mountain about eight years ago. She was living with family and liked going to a prayer room in town to get away. When that room shut down, she thought about opening one of her own.

“I just thought it would be a nice way to do something for someone else,” the retired teacher said.

People can watch her collection of Andrew Womack DVDs and read books by Beth Moore, Janice and Gloria Copeland, Kenneth Hagen, Mike Murdock and Ron Phillips.

“We’re coming from a nondenominational (approach) that believes in healing and praying for others and believes that God answers prayers,” she said. “The scripture says to bear one another’s burden, and that’s what we like to do.”
