Valley Rewind: A 1920s trip to Mount Mitchell

Although originally a narrow gauge railway from Black Mountain to Mount Mitchell laid for the logging industry, the route in the early 1920s  was used more and more for tourist excursions. In this undated Barnhill photograph from the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center's extensive historic archive, a group of travelers poses at the rear of a train car on an outing to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
