Walk for Hunger winners (and walk) are announced

Staff reports

As in years past, Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry will be sponsoring the 2016 Walk for Hunger.  This year’s walk will take place Oct. 9 and will again set out from Black Mountain First Baptist Church on Montreat Road.  SVCM has already begun reaching out for sponsors.  Walk for Hunger T-shirts give local businesses the opportunity to help sponsor the walk while also providing advertising.

The Hunger Walk Steering Committee of Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry has also chosen the winners of this year’s T-shirt contest.

Winners from Owen Middle School are, from left, seventh-grader Samara McKnight, first place; art teacher Patti Lloyd; eighth-grader Mira Stacy, third place; and eighth-grader Summer Thoma, second place.

The winner of the $100 first prize is Samara McKnight, a seventh-grader at Owen Middle School.  The second-place winner is Summer Thoma, and the third place winner is Mira Stacy, both eighth-grade students at Owen Middle School.  All the winners are students of art teacher, Patti Lloyd.

Honorable mentions are third-grader Gracie Polk and fourth-grader Amelia Novak.  Both attend Asheville Christian Academy and are students of art teacher Christine Patete.

Again this year, a small share of the proceeds from the walk will be going to Church World Service.  If you are interested in sponsorship or information on how to participate, contact Cheryl Wilson, SVCM executive director, at 669-9404 or svcmdirector@gmail.com.
