Lake Tomahawk duplicate bridge results

The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain on July 31. There were two winners. Coming in first for north-south were Dan McGaughey and Lynda Bridges. Coming in first for east-west were Bill Abramson and Barbara Lilenfeld. The game is free every Tuesday night. Vacation Bible School at Black Mountain United Methodist Church

The Black Mountain United Methodist Church will hold its annual Vacation Bible School Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 13-15.  Each session will last from 6-8 p.m. with a light supper at the beginning of each session. This year's theme is "Calling All Super Heroes!" There is no cost and the event is open to the public. Call 669-8248 to register or email churchoffice@blackmountainumc.org. 

Cholesterol screening in five minutes

Givens LifeMinistries will provide cholesterol screenings at the Swannanoa United Methodist Church from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8. The screenings will test total cholesterol, HDL and glucose, with results available in five minutes. The cost is $15 and screenings require appointments, which can be made by calling 686-5284.

The Front Porch Theatre holds auditions for upcoming show

The Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts is casting actors for its upcoming production of The God Game by Suzanne Bradbeer. Auditions will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 and from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.

The theatre is seeking three strong actors: two men in their 40s and a woman around the same age. The story centers around Tom, an attractive junior Republican Senator from Virginia, and a rising star who is lately questioning his beliefs.

Rehearsals begin in late September for production dates October 19-21, 26-28 and November 2-4.  For more information contact fpt@blackmountainarts.org or call 669-0930.

VFW Trivia Night and more

Black Mountain VFW Post 9157 will begin hosting Trivia Night every Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Aug. 14. The event will be hosted by Sarah Morris and is free and open to the public. Also open to the public is a new poker league hosted by the VFW, which gets underway on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The first game is at 7 p.m. and a second game follows at 9 p.m. Poker is free and $5 dinners are available. 

The VFW will also host James Stevens & the Keynotes at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 for a concert, which is free and open to the public. 

 Arrowhead Gallery calls on artists for September exhibit 

Arrowhead Gallery is accepting 2D and 3D art for a September exhibit. The theme is “Live Laugh, Love." The goal of this exhibit is to show that what brings us together is stronger than what divides us. This flows from the quote “Live every moment, laugh every day, love beyond words.” Works will be accepted from 2-6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Arrowhead Gallery 78C South Catawba Avenue in Old Fort. The exhibit will be on display on Sept. 7-19 in the annex gallery.
