Winston Churchill program sponsored by the Montreat Adult Summer Club
The Montreat - Black Mountain community is fortunate to have the opportunity to hear the Presidents of both the North Carolina and Tennessee Winston Churchill Societies speak in Montreat at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18 in Upper Anderson Auditorium, a program sponsored by the Montreat Adult Summer Club, an organization that began in 1911 as the Montreat Woman’s Cooperative Association.
Benefit for Children and Friends at Ten Thousand Villages
Ten Thousand Villages Montreat invites shoppers to support Children and Friends Enrichment Center from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, when 15 percent of items purchased will support the Black Mountain daycare.
Black Mountain arts center summer camps are starting up
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts (BlackMountainArts.org) is offering a half-day themed summer camp for children Monday-Friday, July 23-27 and July 30 - Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for the camp is $125. Campers of pre-school age (3-5) will sail the magical seas with "Off to Neverland," while campers of elementary age (6-9) will be "Broadway Bound," learning songs and dances from popular musicals.
Both camps put an emphasis on creative movement, dance and music led by Amy Maze and Kylie Brown. Campers work through the week to create an informal performance to be shared with family and friends.

Warhorse Classic Golf Tournament returns for 32nd year
The annual Warhorse Classic Golf Tournament, which benefits the Owen High School football team, returns to the Black Mountain Golf Course for the 32nd year on Friday, July 27. Registration is $100 per person or $400 for a four-person team. For more information contact golf course operations manager Brent Miller at 669-2710.
Friends of the Swannanoa Library holds 'Groovin' book sale
The Friends of the Swannanoa Library will be holding half-price book sales from 5-8:30 p.m. during two more shows in the Swannanoa concert series Groovin' on Grovemont this summer. The dates for the Tuesday evening sales are July 24 and Aug. 7. All adult hard cover and large paperbacks will be available for 50 cents and adult mass market paperbacks will be 25 cents. Hard cover books for children and young adults will be 25 cents and paperback books for children will be available for 10 cents.
Annual back to school event to be held at The Tack Room
Every year the Tack Room, a Black Mountain-based charity organization, hosts a back to school event to assist children in need in Buncombe County with school supplies. The event returns to 32 Vance Avenue from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 and is open to the public.
Go all in on Wednesdays with Poker at the Post
Black Mountain VFW Post 9157 on 165 Cragmont Road is hosting Poker at the Post! every Wednesday night from 7-9 p.m. The public is invited and registration is free. Players can earn spots in the upcoming end of the season tournaments during the next two weeks.
