Carolyn Griffin White


Carolyn Griffin White, 72, of Hickory, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Born on August 29, 1944 in Burke County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Wilson Griffin and Bessie Penley Griffin. Mrs. White and her husband co-owned Doug White Motors in Hickory, NC for 32 years.  She was also a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Newton, NC. Mrs. White had family in the Black Mountain area.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Krystal Dawn White; sister, Belinda Brooks; and a grandson, Brandon White.

Mrs. White is survived by her husband of 54 years, Doug White; sons, Scott White and wife Linda and Mark White and wife Pamela; grandchildren, Kristen, Garren and Ryan White.

A Visitation was held Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 2–2:45 p.m. at Catawba Memorial Park, Funerals & Cremations prior to the service. A Funeral Service was held Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 3 p.m. at the Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Lucky Hedrick officiating.  Burial followed at Catawba Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan, Garren and Kristen White, Tim Smith, Chad and Kevin Marley. Condolences may be left at The White Family is under the care of Catawba Memorial Park, Funerals & Cremations.

Lillian Osborne Reynolds

Black Mountain

Lillian Osborne Reynolds, 98, of Black Mountain, NC passed away on July 23, 2017 at Ardenwoods assisted living.  She was born May 28, 1919 in Canton, NC to James Wiley Grogan and Georgia Westmoreland Grogan who both died before she was the age of one. She was adopted by James Nelson Osborne and Neal Pless Osborne of Candler, NC.

She graduated from Woman’s College at the University of NC now UNC–Greensboro. In 1942, she married Thomas Davies Reynolds of Asheville, NC, son of prominent educator A.C. Reynolds. She and her husband, lived in Durham, NC where he was a mathematics professor at Duke University. From 1972 the couple lived in Black Mountain, NC where she co-owned Lillibett’s Country Basket and was a real estate agent with her husband. She was a tireless volunteer at the Swannanoa Valley Museum, Kiwanis Thrift Store, and served on the board of the Black Mountain Library.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband in 1997. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Reynolds of Charleston, SC, Susan Sultan of Great Barrington, MA, and Kathy Reynolds of Black Mountain, NC; grandchildren, Tom and Laura Nilsson of Charleston, SC, Katy Nilsson Swiergosz of Charleston, SC, Frances and John McCulloch of Hudson, NY, and Penn Sultan of Providence, RI; and great-grandchildren, Emily Nilsson, Erik Nilsson, Poppy Swiergosz, and Georgia McCulloch.

Private funeral arrangements have been made for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ardenwoods Employees Appreciation Fund, 103 Appalachian Blvd., Arden, NC 28704 and to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 221 North Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.

There will be a Celebration of Elizabeth’s life on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017 at 1 p.m. The Celebration and Committal Service will be held at the Montreat Memorial Garden in Montreat, NC. Please think of a memory or a thought you might want to share with the Family during her Celebration. There will be a water-tight envelope available in which to place a note of remembrance if you so desire. Take the first right just after entering through the Montreat Gate to the parking area. Please dress casual.

William G. Donaldson

Arlington, VA

William G. Donaldson died at his home Thursday, July 13, 2017. He was a veteran of the Army and served in Korea and Vietnam, among other places.

Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Johanna (Bernie) Kirstein Donaldson, formerly of Black Mountain. Burial will be in Arlington. Donations may be made in his name to Walker Chapel United Methodist Church, 4102 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22207, or to Civitan Club of Tysons.
