Lula Averett Karnas, 93, of Black Mountain, passed away February 9, 2017. 
  Mrs. Karnas was born May 8, 1923 in McDowell County to the late Wilburn and Ada Hollifield. She was a dental assistant for Dr. Love, she loved her cat Chloe, and Lula attended Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Richard Averett; brothers, Ernest, Grayson, Roy and Bernie Hollifield; and sisters, Marie Hart, Margaret Gilbert, Ora Bailey, and Beulah Sharp.
  She is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Velez and Margaret Summey; sons, Edward Averett (Suzane) and Frederick Averett; brother, Jay Hollifield; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 
  A private burial was held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Mountain View Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Harwood Home for Funerals, harwoodhomeforfunerals.com.
