Donald John Quarles
Black Mountain
Donald John Quarles, age 85, passed away on October 7, 2016 with his family at his side.
He was born July 5, 1931 in Elwood, Indiana, the son of John and Kate (Horner) Quarles. Donald retired from Textron after 38 years of employment. He served in the U.S. army for 2 years. He moved from Black Mountain, N.C. to Cornelius N.C. in 2013.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Kathy) whom he married February 5, 1954, whom he loved very much. Two children who are very dear to him, Ann Marie Peck (John M.) of Lithia, FL and Donald Joseph Quarles (Michelle L.) of Cornelius, NC; eight grandchildren, John V. Peck of Jacksonville, FL, Meghan E., Collin J., Sean M., and Elizabeth A. (Lizzy) of Lithia, FL, Justin T. Quarles of Boone, NC, Clayton D. and Kendra L. Quarles of Cornelius, NC.
He is also survived by one brother, Merrill Quarles (Mara Le) of Carmel, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kate Quarles; two sisters, Phyllis Budd and Mary Thomas; and one brother, Eugene Quarles.
A mass of Christian burial was held Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Swannanoa, NC with Father Matt Leonard officiating. Burial was at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.

Black Mountain
Virginia Henderson Branch, 85, of Black Mountain passed away October 10, 2016.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Sam Henderson and Blanche Reese; husband, James G. “Doc” Branch; and son, Charles G. Branch.
She is survived by her son, James Samuel Branch; brother, Charles Henderson; and numerous cousins.
Family and friends will celebrate her life at a later date.

Thomas Albee Fulton, Jr.
Black Mountain
Thomas Albee Fulton, Jr., passed away on Sunday evening October 9, 2016 at his home in Black Mountain after a brief illness.
He was born October 1, 1945 in Greensboro, NC to Thomas Albee Fulton & Ethel C. Fulton. He is survived by his mother, his younger brother Ben Fulton and his son Greg Fulton of the Triad area. He was a graduate of Grimsley High School in Greensboro, NC and UNC-CH School of Pharmacy and UNC-CH School of Law.
A family service will be held in his memory at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Greensboro, NC at a later date. Instead of flowers, the family feels sure Tommy would be honored if a donation would be made to a charitable organization of your choosing as he loved the Blue Ridge Parkway, traveling & wildlife.
Barbara Jones
Black Mountain
Barbara Jones, 70, of Black Mountain passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016.
Mrs. Jones was born December 31, 1945 in Buncombe County to the late Roy and Pearl Vanover Burnette.
Barbara loved visiting the beach, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and cooking. She was a wonderful woman who will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth, Floyd, and Charlie Burnette and significant other, Warren Smith.
Barbara is survived by her children, Cynthia Pierce, Randy Jones, and Lyn Haynie; siblings, Mae, Bud, and Bobby; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Robbie, April, Sarah, Jonathan, Christian, Ryan, Silas, Meghan, Payton, Maddox, Jaiden, Shemar, and Mackynzie.
A graveside service was held Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Harwood Home for Funerals, harwoodhomeforfunerals.com.
Elizabeth Ann Boyer
Black Mountain
Elizabeth Ann Boyer, known as "Betty" to family and friends, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016, at Givens Highland Farms in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
Betty was born in Chunju, Korea, to long-term Presbyterian missionaries, The Rev. Elmer Timothy Boyer and Sarah Gladys Perkins Boyer. She attended Maryville College and the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing. After receiving her nursing degree in 1954, she worked first at MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va. before returning to Korea in 1955, to serve as a Presbyterian missionary. She was appointed as Director of Nurses at the Presbyterian Medical Center in Chunju, Korea.
After twelve years of medical work, she returned to the United States to continue working as a nurse in Richmond, Va. Then in 1973 until 1985, and 1988 until 1996 she returned to Korea, to continue as School Nurse and Dietician for the dormitory students at Korea Christian Academy in Taejon, (now Taejon ChristianInternational School). It was during her time in Korea, that she became known as "Aunt Betty" to generations of missionary children and international students.
After retiring in 1996, she made her home in Black Mountain and was active for twenty years in the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church until her health declined.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Frances Bennett, Margaret Lois Dickenson, and Katherine Ellen Moore. She is survived by ·her brother, The Rev. Kenneth E. Boyer and his wife, Sylvia Haley Boyer of Black Mountain, as well as an extended family both in the United States and overseas.
There will be a committal service in the Columbarium Garden at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 12, at 3:30 PM. The Rev. Mary Katherine Robinson will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, Betty's wish was that donations be made in her memory to the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church's general fund or to the church's Local Emergency Relief Fund (LERF). The church's address is P.O. Box 39, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
Donna Faye Hughes Jacobs
Marion
Donna Faye Hughes Jacobs, 57, of Marion, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016.
Mrs. Jacobs was born July 29, 1959 in Buncombe County to the late Jesse and Pauline Pressley Hughes. She has family members in the Swannanoa Valley.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Sandra Whitson.
Donna is survived by her husband, Roger Jacobs; children, Arthur Snelson (Deanna), Billy Dalton (Amanda), Betty Smith (Rob), and David Earl Dalton (Rachelle); brothers, Terry and Mike Hughes; and 22 grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service was held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at 2 p.m. in Victory Baptist Church. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Park. The family received friends immediately following the service at the church.

Marie Allison Voelker

Marie Allison Voelker, 86, of Black Mountain, passed away October 7, 2016.
Mrs. Voelker was born March 5, 1930 in Akron, Ohio. She has been a resident of Black Mountain for the past 24 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Voelker; parents, William and Esther Allison; and sister, Isabelle Allison Corvington.
Marie is survived by children, Patrice Mangan (Don), Michelle Nevling (Bob), Nancy Pope (Tom), Mary Lou Scotese (Brian), and Mark Voelker; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and brother, James Allison.

Jeannette Gregory
Ponchatoula, Louisiana
Jeannette Gregory, age 91, passed away on Saturday, October 8 at home in Ponchatoula, Louisiana surrounded by her family. Memorial services will be held in Black Mountain, North Carolina followed by internment at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Jeannette was born December 28, 1924 and was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, Dr. Herbert W. Gregory.
Survivors include children Anne Authement and husband, Richard; Wayne Gregory and Terri Gouedy-Gregory; grandchildren Tim Gregory and spouse, Tram; Grace Ellise and spouse, Mat; Gabrielle Kramer and spouse, Adam; Chau Young and spouse, Ben; Quy Gregory and spouse Chelsii; John Gregory; Joshua Authement; Jacob Authement and spouse, Ashley; LaTrecha Fayard and spouse, Wesley; 15 great-grandchildren; and brothers Leroy Gregory and Lanny Gregory.
